Overview
Excelsior is managed by five partners, four of whom have worked together in the company for over 10 years. The team comprises of qualified investment professionals, bringing together multiple disciplines and extensive expertise in the region.
The breadth of professional experience and a proactive deal sourcing culture contribute to a solid pipeline of proprietary investment opportunities which has yielded a quality portfolio of investments. In addition, Excelsior has developed a fully independent back office to provide timely and transparent reporting to fund investors and to manage the administrative requirements of portfolio investments.
Gary LawrenceManaging Partner
 | Gary Lawrence is the Managing Partner and founder of Excelsior. He currently serves on the Boards of CJ HelloVision in Korea and Tony Wear (Shanghai) Fashion Co., Ltd in China. He previously served on the Boards of Sanlih E-Television and Tainan Enterprises in Taiwan, Zest Health Clubs and Downer EDI in Australia, DC Chemical in Korea and Nation Multimedia Group in Thailand. Prior to Excelsior, Gary was a Managing Director in the Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking Group, based in Hong Kong. He also worked with Tiger Management in New York as a Managing Director, and prior to joining Tiger, was in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York. Prior to joining Goldman, Gary was an attorney with White & Case. He holds an L.L.B. from the McGill University Faculty of Law and a B.A. from Yale University. In addition, he received an M.A. from Oxford University, attending as Rhodes Scholar. In January 2005, Mr. Lawrence was selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association as one of six NCAA Silver Anniversary Honorees, an award given annually to six former U.S. collegiate student-athletes who have made significant business and community contributions in the twenty-five years since graduation. Bordin ThavikSupervisory Partner
 | Bordin Thavik is the Supervisory Partner to Excelsior and currently serves on the Boards of CJ HelloVision and Galaxia Electronics in Korea. He previously served on the Boards of PrivyLink in Singapore and Taiwan Green Point Enterprises in Taiwan. Prior to working with Excelsior, he served as a Vice President in the Asia Private Equity group at Bankers Trust Company in Hong Kong. Bordin was previously a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Finance team in Hong Kong, leading and participating in the execution of cross-border mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, recapitalizations and financings. Bordin also spent 10 years in engineering and operations management at Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. in Santa Clara, California. Michael KentPartner
 | Michael Kent is a Partner of Excelsior and serves on the Board of Ganzhou Dingsheng Water Technology Co., Ltd. in China. He previously served on the Boards of Downer EDI and Zest Health Clubs in Australia and Indonesia Online in Indonesia. Prior to joining Excelsior, Michael was a consultant to Peregrine Direct Investments in Hong Kong and Australia. From 1980 to 1991, Michael served as Finance Director for the Adelaide Steamship Company Group, a large Australian based conglomerate. During his career at Adsteam, Michael was involved in numerous public market acquisitions, investments and divestments. During this period, he also served as a Director of a number of associated public companies in Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. Michael obtained a B.A. and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Australian National University and an M.B.A. from the University of New South Wales. John YangPartner
 | John Yang is a Partner with Excelsior and currently serves on the Boards of Globe Union Industrial Corp., Sunrex Technology Corp. and Ganzhou Dingsheng Water Technology Co., Ltd. John was an investment director of PrimePartners Asset Management Group, a private equity firm focused on the Asia Pacific Region. Prior to that, John was an equity analyst at Cazenove Asia Limited, where he analyzed listed companies in China and Hong Kong. John also worked in the transaction support and audit departments of PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young in Hong Kong and Toronto, Canada. John holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto. Kimberley YungPartner and Chief Financial Officer
 | Kimberley Yung is a Partner and the Chief Financial Officer of Excelsior having been with the firm since February 2000. Prior to joining Excelsior, Kimberley was a Controller VP for the Asia Management Office of ING Barings and before that, she was the Finance Director of Prudential Asia, an investment advisor for private equity and portfolio funds. Starting her career in the audit group at Ernst & Young, she was also the head of finance of Manulife and Liz Claiborne in Hong Kong. She holds a BCom with Honors from the University of Manitoba, and is a fellow member of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the United Kingdom. Thomas FrickSenior Principal
 | Thomas Frick is a Senior Principal with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, Thomas was a Founding Director at Odyssey Venture Group, a venture capital firm focused on early-stage investing in Greater China. Before Odyssey, Thomas was with Lehman Brothers in Hong Kong and New York, where he was a member of the firm's Asia-Pacific Media & Communications Group, Asia Merchant Banking Group and Energy and Natural Resources Group. While with Lehman Brothers, Thomas was actively involved in a number of capital raisings and strategic advisory transactions. Thomas graduated Phi Beta Kappa with High Honors and Distinction from Kenyon College and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. Kevin LeeSenior Principal
 | Kevin Lee is a Senior Principal with Excelsior. Previously he worked as a management consultant at McKinsey and Company, where he served clients in private equity, semiconductor equipment, flat panel display, and mobile telecom sectors in Korea, Japan, the US, and the Netherlands. Prior to McKinsey, Kevin co-founded LNL Technologies and worked as VP Engineering, developing components for optical long-haul and fiber-to-the-home network. Prior to LNL Technologies, he worked as a post-doctorate associate at the MIT Microphotonics Center, working with CEOs and CTOs of major optical components companies to formulate industry strategy. Kevin started his professional career as an engineering researcher at INTEL Corporation, developing copper interconnection technology for microprocessors. Kevin received a Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and a BA in Materials Science and Engineering from UC Berkeley. Kevin also completed a condensed MBA course offered by McKinsey. Dicken ChiuPrincipal
 | Dicken Chiu is a Principal with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, Dicken was a Business Development Manager of Dairy Farm, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group headquartered in Hong Kong. While with Dairy Farm, Dicken was responsible for projects involving business expansion through mergers and acquisitions and greenfield investments in the foodstuff and retail sectors. Prior to Dairy Farm, Dicken was a Manager in Ernst & Young's Hong Kong corporate finance group. He also worked for several years as an engineer with MTR Corporation. Jo HuangPrincipal
 | Jo Huang is a Principal with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, Jo was an Associate with Credit Suisse Equities in Hong Kong. While at Credit Suisse, Jo was responsible for analyzing Asian companies for the firms institutional clients. Prior to Credit Suisse, Jo was a member in the Fixed Income Research team of Commonwealth Bank Australia. She also worked for several years as a consultant with Essential Consulting in Sydney. Jo holds a Master of Management in Finance from Macquarie University in Australia and a Master of Information Science from the University of Sydney. Sungmin ParkPrincipal
 | Sungmin Park is a Principal with Excelsior. Previously he worked as a research analyst at CLSA Securities Asia in Seoul, where he covered the technology component and small-mid cap sectors. Prior to CLSA, he was a member of the research team of Cosmo Investment Management in Korea, establishing and implementing quant-driven equity fund strategies for institutional investors. Sungmin graduated from Seoul National University in Korea, majoring Electrical Engineering and Business Administration. Jacky XieSenior Associate
 | Jacky Xie is a Senior Associate with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, Jacky was a Vice President with Loewen & Partners, an investment banking firm in Toronto, where he focused on generating investment ideas and deal execution for North American private equity clients. While with Loewen & Partners, Jacky was actively involved in a number of private equity capital raisings, M&A and financial advisory transactions. Prior to Loewen & Partners, Jacky was a Senior Investment Manager at Guangdong Technology Venture Capital Group, where he was responsible for sourcing, executing, closing and monitoring venture capital investments in China. As part of his career at Guangdong Technology Venture Capital Group, Jacky established and managed Kehai Venture Capital Fund for two years. Jacky holds an M.B.A. from Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and a Master in Engineering from South China University of Technology, China. James YuAssociate
 | James Yu is an Associate with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, James was a Senior Associate at Deloitte & Touche’s Corporate Financial Advisory group in Taiwan, with assignments in both Corporate Finance and Transaction Service teams. While at Deloitte, James participated in a range of M&A, strategic advisory and private placement transactions, and led numerous due diligence efforts for clients across Greater China. James holds a Master of Science degree in Finance from Imperical College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, England, and received his B.S. in Economics from Duke University, United States. Ivan ChenAssociate
 | Ivan Chen is an Associate with Excelsior. Prior to joining Excelsior, Ivan was a manager at Ernst & Young’s Business Tax Advisory group in Taiwan, with assignments in both transaction tax and corporate tax advisory teams. At Ernst & Young, he led various tax due diligences and corporate tax advisory engagements. Ivan received his Master of Science degree in Accountancy from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and BA in Economics from University of British Columbia, Canada. Remy LamarlereAssociate
